  • Safety FIRST

Safety is always a priority in the Buzz Robotics team shop. All team members are issued personal safety glasses, and are required to wear them whenever they are in the shop, competition pit area, and anytime that they're working on the robot.

In 2001 the Buzz Robotics team created the Safety-FIRST campaign to remind all FIRST of the importance of safety. Posters and banners were created and distributed to teams at each of the Regional Competitions.

    • Keep materials stored away in the proper locker.
    • Report all injuries, no matter how small, to the instructor immediately.
    • Before using any tool, make sure to have the proper training and permission from your instructor.
    • If any equipment is operating improperly, stop using it and report the problem to the instructor immediately.
    • Always wear an apron. Remove all jewelry from arms and hands. Tuck any loose clothing. Remove any tie or scarf from around the neck.
    • Do not converse with other students while operating machines or using tools.
    • Never light the gas furnace or turn or the compressed air without the instructor's permission.
    • Use all safety devices at all times (this includes goggles, clamps, and guards).
    • If you wire a device by yourself, do not plug it in until it has been approved by the instructor.
    • Only one person is to work on a machine at a time.
    • A partner can be used for help with a setup ONLY.
    • Always use a brush or a broom to clean surfaces. NEVER use your hands.
    • Never bring an unknown liquid near an open flame.
    • When using portable power tools, ALWAYS secure the work to a bench or table.
    • In the Heat Treatment area, treat all materials and tools as if they are HOT!
    • Use each tool for its intended purpose (a screwdriver as a can opener?).
    • Place all waste materials in their proper receptacle for disposal.
    • Wear appropriate clothing to school! Remember the work that you are doing, and do not wear sandals, shorts, or any clothing that can create a hazard for you.
    • There are special safety rules for each tool, especially power tools. If you are unsure, don't use the tool. See the instructor and review the relevant safety rules.
    • In the workshop, you must wear your safety glasses at all times. Make sure to wear the pair that was assigned to you.
    • You must stop work immediately when signaled by the instructor or the class superintendent.
    • Refer to MSDS's (Material Safety Data Sheets) when using hazardous materials.
